The Criminal Injuries Compensation Tribunal was set up to administer compensation for criminally inflicted personal injuries. If you have suffered a personal injury as a result of a crime or violence, or you are the dependent of somebody who died as a result of crime or violence, the tribunal may consider your application for compensation.
The tribunal may award ex gratia compensation for vouched out-of-pocket expenses such as loss of earnings. To be successful, you must inform the Gardai immediately of the incident in which the injury occurred and apply to the tribunal within three months of the incident. The tribunal may extend this time limit if you can show that the reason for the delay in submitting the application justifies exceptional treatment of the application.
