Greenmount National School recently hosted a fundraising event at the Rock Bingo. HOMS Assist were delighted to support this great cause in raising much needed funds to replace some of the interactive whiteboards and special education equipment.
Greenmount N.S. is a Deis Band 2 designated school. Some of the children benefit from special education supports and the teachers do great work with limited resources. State funding only goes so far and unfortunately does not cover all of the day to day running costs.
The Deis programme was introduced to primary and post-primary schools in Ireland in 2006 and is aimed at providing supports to schools with high concentrations of students from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds who are at risk of educational failure.
In Deis schools, retention rates among students who complete the junior cycle have risen to 95.5 per cent, compared with 97.7 per cent for students in non-Deis schools. Some 82.3 per cent of senior cycle students in Deis schools completed their schooling last year compared with 93.2 per cent in non-Deis schools. In 1995, just 61.7 per cent of students in what would now be considered Deis schools completed the Leaving Cert.
